To start, I made this ribbon flower for our dining room wall. I have another much larger project in mind as well, but I wanted to try this one out first just to see if it'd actually work. I think it worked well don't you?
Yea! Yea! I love it! Cute right? All I needed was a wooden plaque, this one I got from Michaels for about $2.50 or so. Then I used 2 rolls of 1.5 inch ribbon. This is a light purple color that was in the dollar bin outside our Michaels store. I think each roll is 4 yards? So that'd be about 8 yards of ribbon for a flower of this size, but they'd look good on a little smaller scale as well. I also used some yarn I had on hand & my large scale embroidery needle.
The first thing you want to do is drill your holes. You need to make sure your middle hole is big enough to have 5 strings of yarn as well as your ribbon. 5 holes are drilled at equal distance from the center hole. These holes can be smaller. I think I made mine a little on the large side, so they don't need to be this big, just large enough for your yarn to go through one time. After your holes are drilled you can spray paint your plaque whatever color you want.
Run your yarn through the holes like I show above. Just go up through the middle then down through each of the holes on the perimeter of the plaque. Do this again & again until all of the holes have the yarn running to them from the center.
Next is the fun part. String your ribbon through your needle (you will likely need to fold the end in half a few times in order to be able to get it through the eye of your needle. Bring the ribbon up through the center hole, leaving a little big under the plaque (you'll hot glue this down later). Then start weaving the ribbon through your yarn. Over then under, over then under, around the circle again & again. It's ok if your ribbon twists up or bunches, this is what makes the flower look really good. I had to stop & twist my ribbon a little bit a few times because it was too straight.
If you're using two rolls of ribbon like I did, you'll run out of the first roll. I just hot glued the end down on the front of the plaque, then started the next one by hot gluing the end in the same spot, and continuing on. The ribbon will hide the spot of the transition very easily. When you get to the end, pull your ribbon through the last hole to the back & hot glue it there, or you can hot glue the ribbon just under the last row of ribbon if your holes are too small to pull the ribbon through.
I really do love how this turned out. It gives me so many ideas for ribbon embroidery. It's so cute hanging on my wall & I love the texture & color! So pretty! What do you think? Have you ever done any embroidery with ribbon?
